“I am a foreigner who has worked in Vietnam for many years, but when checking my social insurance records, I discovered that I am missing a period of social insurance contributions compared to my actual working time. In this case, is it still possible to supplement my records?”

This is a fairly common situation for many foreign workers who have worked for various companies in Vietnam or have had long working periods. Many only discover the missing social insurance data when preparing to leave their job, withdraw their social insurance in a lump sum, or after they have left Vietnam. Some cases involve missing a few months, while others are missing an entire period of work due to incomplete data updates in the system.

According to the 2024 Social Insurance Law and related regulations, the social insurance participation data of employees is, in principle, recorded based on the actual social insurance contribution records of the enterprise. However, in reality, there are many reasons why the social insurance participation period may be missing or not accurately synchronized.

For example, there are cases where companies haven't fully paid social insurance contributions even though employees have actually worked. Some companies are slow to report increases or decreases in the number of employees, leading to discrepancies in the social insurance participation period recorded in the system. Additionally, there are cases where employees change passports, personal information, or work for multiple companies with different social insurance numbers, resulting in incomplete data integration.

Another common problem is that many foreign workers don't regularly check their social insurance data during their employment, only discovering discrepancies when they are about to withdraw their social insurance contributions. Whether or not it's possible to make corrections usually depends on the employee's records, social insurance contribution documents, company data already declared, and the current status of the information recorded in the system.

In some cases, it's still possible to review and adjust the data if there is sufficient documentation proving the actual work history. However, if the previous company has been dissolved, ceased operations, or the employee records are incomplete, the process can be much more complicated.
