“I am an American who worked in Vietnam for almost 5 years, but I am currently living in Thailand. I am no longer in Vietnam and have no plans to return. Can I complete the social insurance procedures online to receive my benefits remotely?”

Many people, after leaving their jobs in Vietnam, do not immediately return to their home country but instead move to work or live in another country. Some are in Singapore, Thailand, South Korea, or Dubai when they begin to inquire about their social insurance benefits that they contributed during their time working in Vietnam. The concern for many is that they no longer reside in Vietnam, do not have a Vietnamese bank account, or cannot personally go to the social insurance agency to process their paperwork.

Many people think that once they leave Vietnam, there's almost no way to complete social insurance procedures, especially if their former company no longer provides support after leaving. However, according to the 2024 Social Insurance Law and current regulations related to resolving social insurance issues for foreign workers, residing in a third country does not automatically negate the right to process social insurance claims in Vietnam.

In reality, many applications can still be processed from abroad if the previous social insurance data is complete and the worker meets the conditions stipulated by Vietnamese law. However, a common misunderstanding is that "online processing" doesn't always mean the entire process can be completed automatically with a few simple electronic steps.

Another common problem is that many foreign workers wait too long before checking their social insurance. After several years, they may no longer possess their old employment documents, forget their social insurance number, or no longer have contact with their previous company in Vietnam. However, if their social insurance participation data is still stored in the system, workers can still receive assistance in checking and determining the appropriate course of action for each specific case.

In many cases, preparing the correct documents from the beginning will significantly reduce processing time for workers while they are abroad.
