“I am an American who worked in Vietnam for about 4 years before returning to my country. I want to check my social insurance number to withdraw my benefits, but I no longer remember it. Is it possible to look it up?”
In reality, many people only start paying attention to their social insurance benefits after returning home or when friends or former colleagues remind them that foreign workers in Vietnam can also be considered for social insurance benefits according to current laws. However, after several years of not using their records in Vietnam, many people no longer remember their social insurance number, lose their social insurance book, or no longer have their old email addresses or employment documents. In some cases, they have changed their passports, so their current information differs from the data registered when they worked in Vietnam.
This causes many people to worry that forgetting their social insurance number will prevent them from processing their applications or that they will lose their previously paid benefits. In fact, according to the 2024 Social Insurance Law and current regulations on social insurance data management, the social insurance number is an identification code used to manage the social insurance participation history of employees. If previous data is still stored on the social insurance system, employees can still be assisted in checking and verifying their information.

It is crucial to have sufficient basic data for verification, such as full name, date of birth, old passport number, nationality, or information about the company where they previously worked in Vietnam. In many cases, foreign workers not only forget their social insurance number but also encounter other problems such as having multiple social insurance numbers due to changing companies, passport changes, or inconsistent personal data between periods of employment.
For example, someone might work for two different companies, but each company registers a separate social insurance number. When they try to look up the data, it appears to be split into multiple different records in the system.
Furthermore, there are cases where the former company has dissolved or is no longer contactable, leaving employees unsure where to begin checking their information. However, not remembering the Social Insurance number does not automatically mean the employee loses all previous social insurance contributions. The important thing is to review the data still stored in the social insurance system and determine the actual status of the records.
This is also why foreign workers should save their social insurance information, social insurance number, and employment records before leaving Vietnam, especially if they haven't processed their social insurance benefits at the time of leaving their job. In many cases, even years after returning to their home country, social insurance data can still be checked and processed if the previous social insurance participation information is still fully recorded.
